Civitavecchia
is now even more of a "port town" than when we were there
about five years ago. We drove through quickly to a new highway that
took us to Rome within an hour. We passed along the beach before heading
inland, then passed vineyards, olive groves, small farms, hot houses.
We started our tour at the Sistine Chapel, through the grand courtyard,
various galleries of the Vatican Museum and finished in the chapel
with its stunning frescoes (all but two have been restored). It was
awe inspiring. After our 2.5 hour tour, the next stop was the Coliseum
(although other significant sites were pointed out along the way by
Francesca, our guide). Lunch, then St. Peter's for the finale before
returning to ship. Amsterdam to Barcelona Journal,
