Arab Republic of Egypt

Egypt acquired full sovereignty following World War II, although independent from Great Britain since 1922. The completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile River in the agriculture and ecology of Egypt.

The capital city is Cairo, the currency is the Egyptian pound, and languages spoken include Arabic (the official language), with English and French primary among many other languages used.

Population is 68,494,000 in 26 governorates within 995,450 sq km (384,343 sq miles).

The climate is desert; hot, dry summers with moderate winters at 27 00 N, 30 00 E.

Egypt is a vast desert plateau interrupted by Nile valley and delta - with a low point of the Qattara Depression -133 meters to a high point of Mount Catherine 2,629 meters.
